See, a development is an advance of some sort. It's something that is useful, something that makes our lives a little easier or more exciting. An innovation is a development that is so completely brand new that it changes the way we think and revolutionizes the way we live. The technology behind loading DVD to iPod is exciting, and while it has added value to our lives, it certainly hasn't revolutionized them, and therefore is not an innovation.
But even though it's not an innovation, loading DVD to iPod is still a pretty cool technological development. It has provided us with the convenience of being able to watch TV and movies whenever and wherever we want.
And that's nothing to sneeze at when you stop and think about how limited entertainment options were in the 1960's. The only way to watch a television program back then was to watch it at home when the network broadcast it. If you wanted to watch a movie, you had to go to a theater. Makes you kind of glad to live in the 21st century, doesn't it?
Soon the ability to convert DVD to iPod was not enough, and the DVD to iPod converter was born. These converters really took off and new tech companies sprung up overnight to try and cash in on the technology.
Consumers really benefitted from the competition that ensued. Conversion speeds, copy quality and storage capabilities of converters all increased as each company strove to corner the DVD to iPod converter market.
As time went on, companies started to think about things like specialization vs. universality. Some companies decided it was a good idea to specialize, narrowing their focus and concentrating on designing converters for specific platforms. Others decided not to limit themselves and designed universal converters that were compatible with both Windows and Macintosh.
Others companies focused on convenience. They figured that the most important thing was to provide customers with a DVD to iPod converter that would enable them to load up their iPods with a simple click of a button.
Naturally it was the companies that were smart enough to create DVD to iPod converters that were both universal and user-friendly that now dominate the marketplace. These converters are versatile, and incredibly easy to use. Loading DVD to iPod with these converters is as simple as clicking one button.
So the next time you hear someone say that loading DVD to iPod is an amazing innovation, you can correct them and tell them that it is actually an amazing technological development. Or you can just keep your mouth shut and watch enjoy watching something on your iPod instead.
