Spiderman Villains - Carnage Posted By : JessicaT

Perhaps one of the most terrifying villains of all time, and surely one of the most terrifying of the Spiderman villains, Carnage is far from a normal run of the mill law breaker. Carnage was spawned when Cletus Kasady, a vicious serial killer bonded with an alien predator.

This bonding created one of the most vile and evil creatures that Spiderman has ever encountered. Rather than hoping for fame or fortune, Carnage wishes for a society where every being is allowed to do exactly as they please; no law, no rules and no consequences.

Because Carnage is half alien, or symbiote, he has some pretty special abilities including superhuman speed and strength, out of this world stamina and agility, and lighting fast reflexes. This makes him one of the toughest Spiderman villains ever.

One of the things that makes this guy even more terrible is that he has an immunity to Spiderman's spider sense. So, when the attacks from Carnage come, Spiderman is usually caught off guard.

Kasady comes from a violent background, probably more violent than all of the Spiderman villains, as Kasady claims his father brutally murdered his mother.

He has also told his doctors that he killed his own grandmother, and tortured his mother's dog, causing her to in turn want to murder him. With an upbringing like that, what do you expect? Kasady was convicted of more than 11 murders, but had murdered much more than that, all by his early twenties.

Carnage is a combination of insanity, sadistic with pure and deadly abilities. It is this kind of villain that Spiderman fans love to see and watch how Spiderman can deal with him.

Do you want to know what there is about Doomsday? Well here is your chance. Doomsday first appeared in 1992 in Superman: The man of steel. He was created by an alien scientist who wished to create the perfect life form. Of all the villains of Superman, Doomsday gained the most pity.

He was placed out as an infant, to die by the vicious atmosphere of Krypton in it's most violent time. He then died as a baby, and was harvested again with whatever was left, to only die again.

This process happened thousands of thousands of times so that this being would be a better, stronger life each time until he reached perfection. Doomsday would forever carry the memory of these deaths and eventually force him to detest all living things.

He was successful in defeating the Justice League, which brought Superman's full attention. In fact, he battled the team with one hand tied behind his back, literally.

Maxima was the only one of the bunch who could have any chance of defending herself against Doomsday. Once Superman and Doomsday meet, they are ready to battle.

Superman had met more than he was able to handle when he met Doomsday, after fighting, began to lose strength quickly while taking a lot of hits. Both of them would continue to fight, neither would concede.

Then, in a historic moment of superhero comic book legends, Doomsday and Superman strike each other at the same time, causing an unforgettable and history making event. This is where the 'death of Superman' came in at.

Doomsday was taken by a Cyborg, and was sent to a faraway place where readers assumed he would stay, however, this was not the case. Doomsday was to be put together one more time, ever reaching that perfect form.

Independent Films in the Digital Age: A Triumph of Diversity over Scarcity

In the brief history of film, advances in technology have from time to time challenged and changed industry models. These advances have wrought their most significant changes on independent sectors of the movie business. In the glory days of the studio system, a parallel or serious rival to that system coming from the independent industry would be unthinkable; the cost and challenge of production and post-production was prohibitive, difficulties of promotion insurmountable. The Internet and many new digital distribution technologies are now starting to remove barriers for the makers and distributors of independent films.

The development of the 16mm camera and advances in sound technology made it possible, though still difficult, for individuals or small groups of filmmakers to make manifest their vision - something rarely possible in the days of the Edison monopoly on technology, or the prohibitive cost of 35mm cameras and professional lighting setups. The challenges of film making were still myriad, but the development of an independent sector of the industry forced the majors to take notice, though the development of subsidiaries specifically tasked to take note of and distribute promising independent films failed to materialize. Independent film had a narrow audience, generally limited to subcultures of underground or experimental film. (Such audiences were often primarily composed of fellow filmmakers - though it bears noting that in many cases, these self-selecting individuals were not those who would turn out to view a majority of the studio efforts.)

Within the last several decades, advances in digital cinema have furthered a similar and all the more powerful renaissance. High-resolution digital video offers an image quality that rivals that of film stock, while video camcorders, and relatively affordable professional-quality editing software capable of being run on inexpensive PCs have made the production and post-production process possible, reasonable and accessible for a substantial number of individuals. With the resulting increase in the number and quality of such films being made, a resulting cultural scene emerged alongside, but not quite outside, the mainstream.

The resulting boom in independent films has forced major distributors to take notice - and conversely, it could be said that without the involvement of major distributors, a comparable boom of popularity and profitability for independent films would not have been possible. What was once seen as a rival to the Hollywood studios has entered in large part into a symbiosis with it.

Most major studios now have subsidiaries that are tasked with helping to develop or distribute independent efforts. The line between independent films and major studio films has been blurred, with many major studio efforts developing the independent aesthetic characterized as "less commercial, more character driven." A space for independent films has opened in the marketplace, and with it, the gap between major studio efforts and the most successful or talented of the independent film efforts has narrowed.

The chief difficulty for independent films is distribution and promotion; this has historically been a chief advantage of major studios. In a hit-driven culture where the prime method for consumers to approach new films is to be drawn to them in the theater, on cable television or through video rentals as a result of widespread promotion, creators of films that do not have similar resources to widely promote or distribute their works are at a profound disadvantage.

The cost to deliver film prints to theaters can be prohibitive. These costs can be dramatically reduced, however, through digitally projected cinema distributed on DVD or via satellite. But the dilemma of the independent film remains, as theaters are under pressure to show films with guaranteed high demand - and the films with the highest demand remain those that are highly publicized through extensive and costly marketing campaigns. Even when finance is not an issue, there remains the scarcity of space available in theaters for the constantly expanding market of independent films.

Certainly, the rise of the home entertainment market has been a boon for film makers not benefiting from the dominant channels of theatrical distribution and has permitted substantial gains for independent films in the marketplace. However, in the major marketplaces of DVD and video, the products taking up the limited shelf space of mass market outlets are, as with theatrical release, largely limited to the products of the largest cultural producers - the hits and blockbusters of the major movie industry.

It is evident that, given current market conditions, independent film cannot break through into the mainstream in a traditional fashion. It is fortunate for independents that an alternative to the mainstream is emerging; a result of the development and ubiquity of digital technologies. Accompanying it is a new ability for independent filmmakers and distributors to reach new audiences in ways that were not possible in previous models. This overcomes a traditional focus on attempting to share the existing market dominated by the major production and distribution houses, and emphasizes opening an audience previously unavailable or unreachable.

Many (perhaps most) independent films gain an audience primarily through the buildup of buzz and word of mouth surrounding them; they follow the model of a slow burn, in distinct opposition to the model of saturation release where a film may be released worldwide on several thousand film screens for a week or two and then fade until the release on DVD and home video. Independent films traditionally have relied on winning acclaim at film festivals and the long-term development of an audience through limited release in order to attract the attention of major distributors.

New alternatives to more costly forms of mass promotion (advertising, commercial tie-ins, and similar) are coming into existence. For instance, social networking sites such as MySpace promise a new ability to build audiences from the bottom rather than the top. The Internet is increasingly becoming a space where potential viewers seek out new options in entertainment, including reviews, summaries, and other information on new films. Referral services at sites such as Amazon.com or Netflix can connect audiences with specific topics of interest to films on the margin that will cater to those interests. In connection with the traditional means of film festival publicity and word of mouth, these developments suggest promising new ways for independent films to build modest to large audiences and connect audiences with subject matter that may interest them but may also have gone previously unnoticed and unknown.

Even should these new sources of promotion manifest their promise, there still remains the difficulty of distribution. Major films are likely to be released on thousands of screens in domestic and foreign markets. Independent films, often restricted to limited release runs, have a less forgiving margin for success and failure. A kind of economy of scale exists; though it may well cost significantly more to distribute a film to many thousands of theaters, per-unit cost drops, and moreover, even a relatively modest audience response spread across a worldwide stage generally ensures a return that will pay for cost of production and distribution. Independent films, often featuring less audience draw in terms of star power, substantially reduced promotional budgets, and less accessible subject matter, are hardly guaranteed success.

The development of digital channels of distribution offers a different and perhaps interrelated model for the success of independent films that might otherwise experience difficulty with the existing system. First, digital distribution significantly reduces costs. No prints need to be produced, only a single lossless digital copy uploaded to a server. Digital channels also mitigate other difficulties of distribution. There is no need, initially, to enter into partnerships with existing supply chains or manufacturers, only online distributors, themselves significantly less encumbered by the restraints of brick-and-mortar distribution.

As costs associated with physical distribution and inventory storage decrease toward zero, even a product with a relatively low audience is distributed at a profit. Making the leap to the mechanism of digital storage, considerably less expensive than that of even minimal, centralized physical warehousing, the advantage is similarly manifest; the least popular titles can be stocked for a fraction of physical-world storage costs in digital form.
However, this model does not indicate the demise of traditional outlets of distribution and exhibition for cultural products - on the contrary, it indicates that different approaches to economy and distribution have the potential to expand purchases in total.

In the work "Consumer Surplus in the Digital Economy", Brynjolfsson, Smith & Hu estimate the "value of increased product variety at online booksellers." Brick-and-mortar bookstores and large publishers alike have benefited significantly from the increased diversity of titles. Online vendors offer an ability to browse amongst titles no longer popularly stocked, or to more easily discover obscure items, the procurement of which might otherwise prove unduly expensive. Online outlets allow customers to consider purchases of titles that were previously unavailable or unknown to them.

Individuals browsing online vendors become aware of the vast diversity available in the marketplace, and then return to the world of local distributors with an expanded sense of the possible. In counterpoint to previous models which capitalized exclusively off of hits and blockbusters, present developments in distribution technique make possible a marketplace that draws revenue from the total pool of cultural products, not merely those in print or high demand.

The diversity of digital technology offers increased investment on the part of the existing consumer base alongside new sources of revenue drawn as niche marketing and narrowcasting provide previously marginalized interests with exposure to products that were previously invisible, due to a lack of presence in the marketplace.

Increases in product variety serve to enhance the overall advantage of independent films, which may gross lower than the mainstream hits, but which may earn larger sums in aggregate. This is of advantage particularly to those distribution houses already in a position to distribute significant numbers of independent films at an affordable rate via ultra-low-cost digital storage and distribution. The more possible choices available to consumers, the more likely any given product (or selection of products) is to sell, and thereby turn a profit.

Even a comparatively small number of individuals purchasing these titles, in significant enough numbers, can become a tidal wave of revenue. In this fashion, one can perceive the veracity and power evident in Joe Kraus' phrase, "millions of markets of dozens."

Sean Landers is an On-line Marketing Associate at EZTakes, a movie download service. EZTakes sells a large catalog of independent films that consumers can purchase, download and burn to DVDs that will play in almost any standard DVD player. By making it easy for consumers to download DVD movies, EZTakes has bridged the gap between the Internet and the living room.

Libraries of commercial-free movies, sports events, or music may be created and digitally stored on the DVR hard drive. The slim Dishnetwork remote contains all the features needed for perfect recordings every time. Live programming may be paused and resumed without missing a second of the action, and one can create instant replays using the Pause and Rewind features. You may record one program while watching another on a different channel. Maintain control over what type of programming is being watched in the privacy of your home with the Parental Control feature. Block inappropriate programming using ratings, program titles, times/dates, or channels.
Dish Network has the most diverse variety of programming selections and offers them in attractive packages varying in number of channels and prices. Podcasting Technology Creates New Ways to Enjoy Television

An offshoot of television technology that's been available for a while but hasn't really caught on is audio only television.  Television without a picture may seem like an oxymoron, but special radios that play just the sound from over the air television channels have been around for decades.  (Actually I have no idea if they're still around, but I remember seeing them decades ago.)  While having access to the audio from a television show provides some semblance of actually watching it, in general it doesn't do justice to the whole experience and for that reason it tends to frustrate people.  Even television news broadcasts are somehow emptier when all you can hear is the audio.
More recently though, against conventional wisdom and in some cases good judgment, television producers are experimenting with audio only versions of their programming and distributing them in the form of podcasts over the Internet.  Although the result has been mixed, there has been a surprising amount of interest in the podcasts among television fans.
Several success stories can be found at ABC.  ABC News Shuffle is a mixture of news stories specially designed for podcasting, and The Afternote is a program based on a political newsletter.  The success of both programs can be attributed to the fact that neither are really verbatim audio versions the news broadcasts with pictures, but rather sound bites edited and compiled to be palatable in audio form.
While customizing the content of television shows to be more friendly in an audio only format seems to go a long way, there are examples of television shows that are unedited before being available in podcast form.  One is Meet the Press which frequently ends up on iTunes' top 100 list.  Another is Nightline.
There are also instances, both good and bad, of popular entertainment television that have been adapted for podcasts.  In most cases they're recaps of individual episodes of various shows.  Fox does this with a number of shows.  The Sci-Fi channel has taken a slightly different approach by providing an episode commentary, similar to what you'd find on a DVD, by the executive producer of Battlestar Galactica.
While the Battlestar Galactica download has proven popular, some audio only summaries of shows just fall flat.  One example is a recap of Fox's Family Guy that just consisted of a summary lacking any audio from the actual show whatsoever.
Podcasts related to TV shows promise to have some benefits both for viewers and for the producers of the shows themselves.  Since podcasts are more portable than TV shows, fans can follow the plot lines of their favorite shows even when they don't have the time to watch them.  This comes from the fact that the recaps of the shows are often summarized and in the form of podcasts they can be listened to nearly anywhere: on the subway, in the car, even while doing something else that would be too much of a distraction to pay attention to a screen.  Another thing that makes the podcasts attractive to TV viewers is that they often don't have commercials.
For producers, podcasts have the potential to create interest in the shows.  Someone might listen to a recap and think: "I'll have to watch this next time it comes on."  It's also good for producers because, especially in the case of news programing it may be possible to sell subscriptions for the downloaded programs.

The Haunted Shed - part 1

This promised to be an interesting investigation. We got a phone call from a family from the north of England telling us that there was a ghost haunting their garden shed! An investigation like this doesn't come along too often, so the team's spiritualist medium Annabel Keogh and I jumped into the car and head off to this supposed shed of terror!

The family that lived there told us that objects often go missing in the garden, only to turn up in the shed a few days later. Apparently this had been going on for some time now. They also wake up at night and hear strange banging coming from the shed, often noticing that the shed light is being switched on and off.

The last straw came when their 6-year-old daughter claimed that she had seen an old man looking out of the shed window at her while she was playing. The family couldn't take anymore of this and decided to call us.

As the location was so small, it was decided that only Annabel and myself would go along, much to the dismay at the other members. When we got there, we asked the family if any other ghostly happenings had occurred in any parts of the house. Apparently not, so the paranormal activity seemed to be centred around the shed.

This was something I had never come across before in all the years of the team's investigations. I was really excited by what we might find in this shed, even if it was all very low-key.

I only brought the bear minimum of equipment with me. There would be no point in bringing along the temperature reader as this was going to be a cold night in November, and as there was electrical wiring in the shed, the EMF reader would be completely useless.

A video camera was set up outside the shed, to capture any movements that we may miss. I also had my handheld camera with me, and Annabel had the still camera and took lots of photos. Apart from a couple of orbs, there was very little else.

Annabel began her reading, and as soon as she began, I thought I heard what sounded like a small 'thump' coming from the corner of the shed. I placed a Dictaphone in that corner should we pick anymore sounds emanating from that area.

Dish Network Is A Much Better Value Than The Cable TV Industry

subscribers can choose programming packages that range from thirty channels all the way up to two hundred and seventy channels. They can also choose from four programming packages the feature heavy concentrations of Spanish language programming and one programming package featuring seventeen channels of Chinese language programming in addition to all of the choices in English.

Dish Network can also draw from this huge number of channels when their subscribers want to customize their programming packages. For example, a variety of seasonal sports subscriptions are available from Dish Network. Seasonal Sports subscriptions are generally available for every major type of sports and provides every game played for that league during the regular season. Seasonal Sports Subscriptions allow you to watch lots of basketball, baseball, hockey, and college sports. You can also subscriber to regional sports networks to get even more sports coverage. Local channels and XM satellite radio channels are also available as additional programming from Dish Network.

Dish Network also provides more High Definition programming than any other television service provider. The typical cable company struggles to offer a couple of high definition channels, but Dish Network offers thirty national high definition channels plus local high definition channels in many markets.

So how can Dish Network offer so much more? The answer is that most cable TV companies are still using cable networks that are relics of the eighties before satellite television technology took off. They've benefited somewhat from the invention of new data compression technologies, but that doesn't change the fact that those cable network's simply can't handle that amount of data needed to transmit all of those hundreds of channels that give Dish Network its edge.

Of course, the cable industry as a whole is trying to make upgrades, but the enormous expenses associated with replacing thousands of mile of cable in being passed onto cable TV subscribers. That's one of the reasons why cable rates are so high and are likely to keep going up on the order of eight percent a year on average for the foreseeable future. And that's where Dish Network really has the cable industry beat: value.

Sony and Toshiba Face Off Over High Definition Disc Technology

There are some new developments in the war between Toshiba's HD-DVD format and Sony's Blu-ray.  Toshiba recently announced the release of a HD-DVD player capable of playing High Definition video in 1080p resolution, and Sony says that it will release a Blu-ray recorder in Japan by the end of the year.  Both of these moves are meant to give each company an advantage in the competition to have their High Definition video disc format come out on top.
For anyone not familiar with this issue, Blu-ray and HD-DVD are both High Definition Television Digital Video Discs (DVD's) and are competing in the marketplace to become the dominant format.  Both use blue laser technology to pack more data onto a disc than standard DVD technology- which uses a red laser- is capable of.  The fact that they can deal with more data makes both formats up to the task of storing High Definition Video content, but there are some pretty major differences between them.  For example each side of an HD-DVD can hold fifteen gigabytes of data or thirty gigabytes total, while a Blu-ray disc can hold twenty five gigabytes per side or fifty gigabytes total.
Looking at the difference in the capacities of the two formats, it should be a no brainer that the Blu-ray format should win out in this war, but it's not quite that simple.  Blu-ray disc players tend to be more expensive than HD-DVD players, and each format has the backing of some pretty major players in the home entertainment electronics and computer industries.  For example, Blu-ray has the support of a number electronics manufacturers including Sony, Dell, Apple, Philips, Sharp, HP, and many others.  It also has the support of a number of movie studios including Paramount, Fox, Disney, MGM, and Warner  The HD-DVD format has the support of only three studios- Warner, Universal, and Paramount.  (Paramount and Warner are hedging their bets in this war by releasing titles in both formats.)  The fact that so many more studios are backing Blu-ray is another factor that bodes well for it's triumph, but that gain is  largely offset by the fact that Microsoft has is backing HD-DVD by providing support for the format through it's new Vista operating system and making the Xbox HD-DVD compatible.
The HD-DVD/Blu-Ray format war has had an adverse effect on the adoption of High Definition Television technology in general.  Many consumers are waiting before buying a player in one format or another because they don't want to be stuck with the loser in a few years which is what happened to people who invested in Betamax video cassette technology over twenty years ago.  As a result, backers of both technologies are angling to give their's a foothold, which is what we're seeing now.
The introduction Toshiba's new HD-DVD player that can handle 1080p will probably just make HD-DVD more competitive with Blu-ray, because Blu-ray players are already 1080p capable.  At present though, this is something of a moot point because there isn't really anything to watch in 1080p resolution anyway.  Sony's Blu-ray recorder could give the technology a leg up.  After all, if you can record in a format, then you have something to watch in that format, which will make it more attractive.
What the industry really needs to do is create devices that are compatible with both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs.  The first one to do that will see immediately see huge profits and prevent any one format form monopolizing the High Definition Television DVD market.

The New PlayStation 3 is an Example of Cutting Edge Video Game Technology

One thing that many people use their televisions for that goes largely unnoticed in the greater scheme of things is video gaming.  There are actually a variety of gaming platforms on the market that are designed to take full advantage of state of the art television technology like High Definition Television.  The video game platform that's dominated the market all the way back to 1994 is Sony's PlayStation.  With over thirteen thousand individual PlayStation video game titles available world wide, this platform easily backs up that domination.
Sony has recently released the latest version of it's PlatStation 3, often referred to simply as PS3.  Not to outdone by Microsoft with it's new Xbox 360 which sports three separate processors each running at 3.2 Gigahertz, the Sony joined forces with IBM and Toshiba to develop what they call the Cell processor.  The Cell processor has one 3.2 GigaHertz PowerPC processor with a 512 KB L2 cache which, while impressive in it's own right, only manages the eight other "Synergistic Processing Elements" (or SPEs) that do the real work.  Each SPE is also equipped with 256 Kilobytes of SRAM for some serious number crunching.
One thing that's even more impressive about this system is that it's deliberately designed for redundancy.  Even though there are eight SPEs, only seven of them are intended to work at any given time.  The eighth one is in reserve in case one of the others fails.
So far we've accounted for nine processors (eight SPEs plus the one PowerPC processor), but Sony wasn't content with that.  The new PS3 has a separate Graphic Processing Unit, or GPU, that is calls the RSX "Reality Synthesizer" which runs at 550-MHz and has 300 million transistors built in!  The "Reality Synthesizer" has the ability to create graphics that are nearly indistinguishable from photographs of real objects, which promises an incredible step forward in gaming reality.
One feature of the new PS3 that's been much anticipated is it's ability to support 1080p resolution.  Unfortunately that capability hasn't actually made it onto this model.  It does still support standard definition 480i and high definition 720p resolution though.
The new PS3 also has lots of features that make it fully functional home entertainment device.  For one thing it has a Blu-ray disc drive which enables it to play High Definition video when connected to a High Definition Television set.  The Blu-ray drive is also backward compatible so the new PS3 can play all varieties of CD's and DVD's (ROM, R+W, +R, etc.)  It's also able to play PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.
The new PlayStation 3 will be available in a 20 Gigabyte hard drive model and a 60 Gigabyte hard drive model.  The 20 Gigabyte model actually loses some functionality compared to last year's 20 Gigabyte model, including Wi-Fi compatibility, HDMI output, Flash Inputs, and a memory stick.  The 60 Gigabyte model has lots of built in features though including  4 USB ports, a one Gigabit Ethernet port, and optical audio output among others.  It also supports Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound (which it better if it's High Definition compatible).
With all of these great features and over 13,000 video games to play on it, the new PS3 is truly a competitive video game system.

Both formats provide excellence in crisp, well-defined pictures and quality CD quality or Dolby Surround sound. High definition television viewing is like 'being there' and is viewed in wide-screen theater-like viewing. It has been compared to viewing a scene from an open window or a porch. It is safe to say that once a program is viewed in high definition, it would be difficult to return to standard analog resolution. The DVR provides options for your home entertainment system giving you full control over what and when programs are viewed in your home. One can record and digitally store up to 100 hours of favorites for later viewing - commercial-free. Create your own instant replays of sports action or a library of favorite movies, music, sports events, or whatever you desire. All will be ready for watching on your time schedule - not the broadcast schedule. Eliminate unwanted programming by using the Parental Control command. Programs may be blocked using ratings, titles, times, or channels. This keeps one free of worry about 'little eyes' accidentally seeing inappropriate shows.

Receivers From Dish Network Are Versatile

currently offers more channels in High Definition than any of its competitors, which makes it a great option for anyone who wants to take full advantage of high definition technology right now.

Because high definition television is a much more data intensive format than any that came before it, the satellite receivers that Dish Network provides along with its high definition television entertainment packages have to be that much more versatile. Because high definition television sets can still display standard definition programming, and high definition television set owners still enjoy programming that hasn't made the switch to high def yet, Dish Network's high definition satellite receivers still have to be able to deal with programming in standard definition television and the intermediary enhanced definition format, as well as high definition television. That means that the high definition television satellite receivers actually have to deal with four separate television resolutions. A resolution of 480i is designated as standard definition television (SDTV) and 480p is enhanced definition television (EDTV). High Definition Television can take the form of either 720p or 1080i.

In addition to different resolutions, different types of television are also transmitted using different data compression formats. Because television programming is so data intensive and Dish Network transmits so many channels all at once, those channels have to undergo data compression so that the transmission hardware can handle all of that data. Dish Network's standard definition programming is transmitted in MPEG-2 data compression format, but since high definition television is so much more data intensive, it's compressed into the newer MPEG-4 format. As a result, Dish Network's high definition satellite receivers have to be able to decompress programming from MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 formats.

Dish Network currently offers two high definition satellite receiver models that both handle all of the requirements mentioned above with ease. The ViP211 is the entry level model which can deliver a single television signal to a single TV set. It has all of the features that you would expect from any Dish Network satellite receiver including the Electronic Program Guide, on screen Caller ID capability, and more. It also comes with the ability to receive over the air High Definition broadcasts.

The ViP622 DVR is the most advanced satellite receiver offered by Dish Network. It has the features of the ViP211, but can also send two separate television signals to two separate TV sets (with the HDTV programming sent to the second set down-converted to SDTV), and record programming so it can be watched at your convenience. The ViP622 DVR can record up to 200 hours of SDTV or 30 hours of HDTV.

Both Dish Network High Def satellite receivers will provide all of the features you need to enjoy the television format of the future.

More Signs That High Definition Technology Is Poised To Take Off

There has been a good deal of speculation recently about whether or not High Definition Television is about to take off in the United States.  High Definition technology has been around for a long time in Japan, but there's been somewhat luke warm interest in it in the United States.  The lack of interest has widely been attributed to the high price of the actual High Definition televisions sets, the few options for High Definition capable television accessories (like DVD and DVR), and a lack of High Definition programing.
However, it looks like a number of factors are beginning to align in such a way as to spell a huge upsurge in the popularity of this technology.  One great indication is that sales of High Definition Televisions have jumped during the past year.  Best Buy recently reported a sharp increase in profits that it attributes to the fact that it's sales of High Definition television sets doubled in the second quarter.  As a result, Best Buy plans to build more of it's special High Definition television stores, hire more High Definition TV installers, and pour more money into advertising.  All of these actions will create more awareness and availability of High Def products which will help the technology take hold.
Another good indicator is a upsurge in new High Definition devices being introduced to the market.  Both Directv and TiVo have recently introduced High Definition Digital Video Recording devices.  The TiVo Series3  HD Digital Media Recorder is aimed at cable television subscribers.  The unit can store up to three hundred hours of standard definition program content or up to thirty two hours of High Definition programming.  It will record two shows (even if they're both in High Def) at the same time, while the viewer watches a third.  The cost of the unit will probably be prohibitive to most potential customers.  It costs almost eight hundred dollars and requires a ten dollar monthly fee on top of that to use.
The Directv High Definition DVR, model HR20-700s, is more affordable, but also more limited in it's functionality.  It retails for about three hundred dollars and Directv charges about five dollars a month for it's use.  At fifty hours, it can actually record more High Definition programing than TiVo's HD DVR, but the upper limit for standard definition is only two hundred hours.  It will also record two shows at once while allowing users to watch a third show.  Overall, the Directv unit looks like a better value than the TiVo unit, but of course since one is for cable and one if for satellite television, they aren't really in competition with each other.  It is conceivable that they might factor into the war between cable and satellite TV though.
There also promises to be an upsurge in the amount of High Definition programming available.  The president of Comcast recently announced that the giant cable company will probably deliver between thirty two and thirty five High Definition Television channels by the end of 2007.  Currently, Dish Network is the leading provider of High Definition programming with twenty nine channels.  This competition to deliver the most High Definition channels, especially with more people buying HDTV equipment, is sure to prompt the creation of even more High Definition channels.
With news like this, the future looks brighter for High Definition Television technology all the time.

Having a PocketDish Means Versatility

There have always been people willing to explore the possibility of combining different technologies. Television itself was originally a combination of older radio technology and a cathode ray tube. Now computers have been combined with virtually everything to make them function better. Cars have had computers built into them for years, and the newer ones often have several computers that perform different functions. Digital cameras are essentially computers connected to optical devices, and even digital watches are computers. Now, Dish Network has begun an experiment with adding digital video recording technology onto portable video devices in the form of the two higher end models in its PocketDish line.
These two models of the PocketDish- the AV500E and the AV700E- both have the ability to record video from anything that will play it over compatible output jacks. This makes a wide variety of electronic appliances including TV's, VCR's, camcorders, computers, cable boxes, satellite receivers, and DVD players sources of video for the AV500E and the AV700E.
The AV500E and the AV700E record video from these sources in the sophisticated MPEG-4 compression format which means that their hard drives can hold enormous amounts of video. The AV500E with a thirty gigabyte hard drive can store up to one hundred and twenty hours worth of video and the AV700E can store up to one hundred and sixty hours worth of video on its forty gigabyte hard drive. This makes either of these units great choices for anyone who wants to shoot video on a long trip and needs a repository for that video. Both the AV500E and the AV700E can serve this purpose and even allow video enthusiasts to review their work by playing it back on the units' full color built in LCD screens. The fact that the AV500E and the AV700E both have 16:9 aspect ratio screens means that they can even display video filmed in wide screen format although there's a chance that wide screen format will decrease the number of hours that the units can store.
Besides the fact that the AV500E and the AV700E have built in digital video recorders, PocketDishes in general are distinguished from other portable video devices by the fact that they download their video programming from Dish Network digital video recorders rather than from the Internet. This makes them a lot more convenient than competing models that don't have this advantage. Getting video from Dish Network digital video recorders also has the benefit of being able to download video at a rate of roughly one hour of video for every five minutes of download time, versus the fact that video can only be acquired in real time when using the digital video recording feature built into the PocketDishes. The disadvantage of downloading video from a digital video recorder is that all of the downloaded video is in MPEG-2 data compression format, which means that the unit can only store about a quarter of the number of hours of video as if it was in the MPEG-4 that the PocketDish records in.
That said, Dish Network's PocketDish is an extremely versatile portable video device which will give the competition a real run for its money.
